UK jobless rate highest since 2016 as second COVID-19 lockdown hits

Image
Britain’s unemployment rate hit its highest in nearly five years in the three months to November, when coronavirus cases began to rise for a second time and most of the country returned to a partial lockdown. Redundancies touched a record high, taking the unemployment rate to 5.0%, its highest since mid-2016, according to official data, although the increase was slightly weaker than economists’ forecasts. There were some signs of a limited recovery in December, when lockdown measures eased, although a deterioration is likely in early 2021 as a tougher lockdown shut schools and closed most non-essential businesses to the public. Tax data for December showed a 52,000 increase in the number of staff on company payrolls from November, but there were 828,000 fewer workers on payrolls than in February. Economists said the data showed the jobs market was holding up better than many forecasters had feared.Unemployment has been kept down by the government’s Job Retention Scheme, which support

Don't Ignore the Good News On Covid-19 From Asia

Image
It’s easy to feel that there’s no light at the end of the Covid-19 tunnel. Europe’s intensive care wards are filling up again,   pushing   France and Germany into a fresh round of stay-at-home restrictions and lockdowns — albeit ones designed to be softer than the first. Even countries hit hard by the first wave, such as Italy and Sweden, are seeing rising cases, suggesting herd immunity is a long way off. The U.S. looks to have given up on controlling the pandemic until a vaccine arrives. Yet we shouldn’t ignore the better news from Asia. The strategies pursued by South Korea, Vietnam, China and others do still seem to be paying off. While the total Covid-19 death toll is between 500-700 per million people in France, the U.K., Spain and the U.S., in China and South Korea it is below 10 per million. Cases are a less perfect measure, but there’s a similar observable gap. Wuhan, once the epicenter of Covid-19, is welcoming tourists again. The perception of an Asian advantage in this pa

US signs up pharmacy chains as Covid-19 vaccination centres: Report

Image
Several US retail pharmacy chains have agreed to serve as Covid-19 vaccination sites under a federal government plan, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. A plan by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed companies who have agreed to participate include Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc, CVS Health Corp , Walmart Inc, Kroger Co and Costco Wholesale Corp, the  report  said. The government would provide the vaccines to the pharmacies free of charge, the Wall Street Journal report said, to help expand and accelerate the public’s access to vaccines as supplies increase. The pharmacies would be involved in the second phase of the planned vaccine rollout in the United States, the report said, with the first phase targeted at healthcare workers and others at high risk of infection. The companies involved in the plan and the CDC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

PLANNING IS UNDERWAY:CVS, Walgreens Among Pharmacies Set to Give Covid-19 Vaccines

Image
About a dozen pharmacy chains will partner with the federal government to administer Covid-19 vaccines, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday in an update to states. CVS Health Corp. ,  Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc.  and  Walmart Inc.  are among those that have already enrolled to receive vaccines directly from the CDC. The companies represent about 35,000 stores, and the CDC anticipates more chains will sign up. Participating pharmacies are expected to start administering vaccines during phase two, when more doses become available. Working with drugstores could help quickly vaccinate people given their sprawling reach and the number of patients they serve.CVS and Walgreens  are slated  to be involved in earlier stages of the rollout to help vaccinate residents of long-term care facilities. Strong earthquake kills 19 people in Turkey and Greek islands

Nineteen people were killed in Turkey and Greece after a strong earthquake struck the Aegean Sea on Friday, bringing buildings crashing down and setting off tidal waves which slammed into coastal areas and islands. People ran onto streets in panic in the Turkish city of Izmir, witnesses said, after the quake struck with a magnitude of up to 7.0. U.S. nursing homes still face COVID-19 test delays; you can wash Halloween candy

The following is a roundup of some of the latest scientific studies on the novel coronavirus and efforts to find treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. U.S. nursing homes lack access to prompt COVID-19 diagnoses Most U.S. nursing homes still cannot get prompt results of COVID-19 tests of staff and residents, researchers reported on Friday in JAMA Internal Medicine. They received responses from more than 15,000 skilled nursing facilities to the question: In the past two weeks, on average how long did it take you to receive COVID-19 test results? Only 14% said they get results of the most reliable viral tests back in less than one day, while 40% said it took at least three days to get results. Study co-author Dr. Michael Barnett of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health called that "an unacceptably slow turnaround." This was true "even among homes in hotspot counties supplied with rapid testing machines from the federal government,

Brazil will buy China COVID-19 vaccine, VP Mourão says, contradicting Bolsonaro

Image
Brazil’s government will “of course” buy a Chinese COVID-19 vaccine that is being tested in the country, Vice President Hamilton Mourão said on Friday, in the latest example of him contradicting President Jair Bolsonaro. Last week, Bolsonaro, a long-standing China critic, said the federal government would not buy a COVID-19 vaccine from China’s Sinovac, one day after the health minister said that it would be included in the nation’s immunization program. His comments thrust into the open a simmering debate over vaccine policy between the president and key governors, who have been exploring alternatives to the AstraZeneca vaccine the federal government has prioritized. However, in an interview in the magazine Veja that hit the stands on Friday, Mourão said Bolsonaro’s stance was without substance, putting it down to a war of words with political rivals, like Sao Paulo state Governor João Doria. The government will buy the vaccine, of course it will. We have already put the resources in B

Pakistan PM Imran Khan vows to rid the world of Islamophobia, blasphemy

Image
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Friday vowed to run a campaign, by activating Islamic states’ leaders, to make the Western world understand that the Muslims get hurt the most due to disrespect of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). “We are 1.25 billion Muslims. Why can’t we do that? I feel sad to say that it is a great failure of the Muslim world leaders. “I will run a campaign. I will contact the Muslim world leaders. I am sure, if we collectively make them understand that … disrespect of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is the worst for us,” he said. Addressing the National Rehmatullil Alameen Conference held here in connection with the Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH), Khan said the Islamic world would have to tell the West that irrespective of the fact that thousands of Muslims had been killed in Afghanistan, Syria and Libya, the blasphemy of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) hurt them far more than loss of their lives. Starting with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran in the mesmerising

What you need to know about a COVID-19 vaccine

Image
A vaccine for COVID-19 will be a critical tool for helping bring the pandemic under control when combined with effective testing and existing prevention measures.   Experts around the world are working hard to accelerate the development and manufacturing of a safe and effective vaccine. The threat to children posed by COVID-19 is enormous, extending far beyond the immediate physical effects of the disease. As lockdown restrictions continue or are re-imposed, children’s access to essential health services may be seriously affected. The resulting reductions in routine healthcare coverage levels and a looming recession are threatening the health and the future of a generation of children. Below are answers to some of the most common questions parents might have about a potential COVID-19 vaccine. When will a COVID-19 vaccine be ready? Developing a safe and effective vaccine takes time. There are currently more than 200 vaccine candidates under development, with many in clinical trials.
